GERMANY: Medieval Bavarian Villages

Bavaria is full of cute little villages and towns.

It's almost like you see a cute little village and just think they can't get any cuter.

Until you get to the next little village and it's just as cute.

Or cuter.

And of course, we always felt like we had found some little hidden gem that no one else had discovered.

Well, sort of.

The first little village we stopped in was Rothenburg ob der Tauber, a well-preserved medieval town with the original walls and gates.

The town clock (glockspiel) chimes and the townsmen drink, well, what else, but beer!

Freiburg im Breisgau is another village with a cute little medieval Alstadt (old town.)

How does a McDonald's happen to get primo space in the old town?

It is pretty much impossible to not sample the sausages.

When I was a little 7-year-old girl we went to Schwabish Hall to visit a relative. It holds a special place for me, so I wanted to make sure we went back to see what I remembered of the town.

Sadly, I remembered nothing.

But I do remember a very kind and generous "old" lady, Tante Hedwig, who was very sweet to us.

My long-suffering husband patiently indulged my walk down Memory Lane.

So that now I have new memories of Schwabish Hall.

In case you didn't recognize her, in the old photo of people, Linda is the person on the far right hand side.
