SWITZERLAND: Let's Drive To Zurich - on a Whim

We had some unscheduled time after we explored all the Ludwig castles in Bavaria.

For something radically different, we took a look at a map, and discovered that Fussen, Germany to Zurich, Switzerland was less than 3 hours to drive!

So, being wild and crazy retirees with time on our hands, we figured "What the heck, let's go to Switzerland!"

No agenda, no plans, just a spontaneous jaunt.

To drive to Switzerland from Fussen we had to pass through Austria. Because Germany, Austria and Switzerland are all Schengen countries we can cross country borders and not have to stop at immigration.

As soon as we crossed the border from Germany into Austria this flashed up on our Google Maps navigation screen. Also, our cellular provider changed.

Then when we went from Austria into Switzerland Google Maps tells us we cross the border on the cloverleaf on the highway. Plus, our cellular service provider changed all over again.

And, you can also see the Rhine River forms the border between Switzerland and Austria.

Anyway, after we got over that fascination with the maps and cellular service, we arrived in Zurich.

Some scenes from Zurich.

The train station is incredibly busy.

Look at the scheduling and how frequently trains are coming into the city. Also look at the precise time. This is Switzerland, home of precision watches.

We had been experiencing such bad weather since we had arrived in Germany and Austria, that when the sun came out I loved looking at the light and shadow contrasts on the buildings.

I also had fun looking for the overhead signs and guessing what kind of trade was below.

Some easier ones.

John enjoys watches, so he was in Watch Heaven in Switzerland.

I had to remind John that he only has two wrists and limited luggage space.

Linda, have you rented a car in one European country and dropped it off in another country?

We picked up the car in Frankfurt (Germany) and took it to Austria, Italy, Switzerland and France. No problem crossing Schengen borders. We did try to switch the car in Austria for a smaller car, but, they would not do it and I was told with disdain "we are separate countries." Not sure how drop-off would work. Maybe you could find a company that would allow the switch. (For a fee.)

I did a check with Avis and I can pick up a car in Zurich and drop it off in Amsterdam, for a $$$ fee but not much different then ZUR-MUN-BER-AMS flights and we have more flexibility. very early planning stage.
