MEXICO: Hills in San Miguel de Allende

San Miguel de Allende is in Mexico’s central highlands, about a 4 hour drive north of Mexico City.

It sits at an elevation of about 1,900 m (6,200 ft).

For those of you that are not familiar with elevation, let me put this in perspective.

Vancouver, Halifax, New York City, San Francisco, London, Amsterdam and Tokyo, are all basically at sea level, with 0 elevation in both metric and imperial measures.

Denver is nicknamed the Mile High City, because its official elevation is exactly one mile (1609 meters or 5280 feet) above sea level.

So that puts San Miguel de Allende at a higher elevation than Denver.

Upsides are the beautiful views.

Downside is climbing up all the hills.

And as luck would have it, our Airbnb is at the top of a hill. A BIG hill. This is the route downhill to get to the old town from our front door.

Not to be forgotten, is that what goes down, must go up! Coming back to our place from the old town is something to look forward to. NOT! This is the first leg of the climb UP from the old town.

The last block UP is BRUTAL. We have to go right to the TOP!

This is a photo in our AirBnb of the street, outside our door, from 1954. I guess I really should not complain.

However, I am expecting to be rewarded with a teenage butt.

John is a smart man and knows not to say anything about my hopes for a teenage butt.

Let’s hope that before the end of our month-long stay it gets easier.

Just scanning some of your posts my mind is a blur with all the different places you have visited let alone the specific sights, historical references, food, drink and landmarks that you have experienced. You have done an amazing job with your blog and got more than enough material for a travel book or two. Linda, you have never looked any different in the forty years I have known you (that's as close as I dare get to making a butt comment, not that I checked out your butt 40 years ago...ha, ha, ha). You both are looking great.

Thanks Gordon. It is 40 years!!!! YIKES! You are right! Thanks also about the blog compliments. It is a love-hate relationship because it is so time consuming, but I am sure I will be glad in years to come. We have seen and done a lot. I think doing the blog posts also helps me to remember what we have done. Thanks for reading the blog and commenting. It motivates me.

I hope you don't run out of labels; it truly is impressive how well the subjects are organized. We may do a tour of Austria, Switzerland, Germany and the Netherlands next year and I will be checking your posts for information and ideas (may finish off with time in London and a flight on a Spitfire from Biggin Hill).

not all the photos do the hills justice. There are some flat roads - but it seems no matter where we go in this town it always involves trudging back uphill to our Airbnb.

Sounds like a great vacation. And the Spitfire flight will be very special.
