The park is surrounded by the Piva and Tara rivers and there are 23 mountain tops that are over 2300 meters of altitude that drop down to steep canyons.
December to March, Durmitor is a major ski resort, while in summer, it’s popular for hiking, rafting, and other outdoor activities.
We were looking forward to hiking and just soaking up the beauty of the UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Driving into the area through the plateaus we had beautiful blue skies and sun.
And then……
After our hike around the lake we rewarded ourselves with a mulled wine.
Or two......
When we finally got a break in the weather we headed out to explore.
The Durmitor is a mountain area, locally called a massif, featuring 48 separate peaks; Bobotov Kuk is the highest reaching a summit of 8,278 feet (2,523 m).
It is amazing that some people live here.
Some animal life.
There are three canyons that surround the Durmitor massif which include Draga Canyon, Susica Canyon, and Tara River Canyon.
The Tara River Canyon is 4,265 feet (1,300 m) deep and stretches 49.7 miles (80 km) long making it the deepest gorge in Europe and possibly the second largest after the Grand Canyon.
We drove through a lot of tunnels.
This was my favourite tunnel.
After having experienced "moody" weather for a good part of our time in the area it was great to see it in its glory with beautiful blue skies.
Gotta love bright blue skies.
