Every Sunday the city’s central square has a tradition of entertainment and market stalls.
On the main stage traditional jarana dancers in embroidered huipiles perform to live music. The ladies' outfits are fresh and colourful and look great with baskets of equally colourful produce balanced on their shoulders.
They seem to like their shoe shine stands.
I was looking for a seat in the shade and the only spot left was a big space beside this guy. (I'm not sure why.) He turned out to be very friendly and wanted me to take his picture. He made a show of pulling in his tummy and flexing his muscles for the photo.
The local stores and stalls display hipiles, dresses or tunics. Hipiles are a traditional outfit for the women and are usually white with colorful embroidery. I figured they were mostly for tourists.
But, I have seen many local women wearing them, not only in the city, but in the small towns and villages in
the area.
I haven’t bought one because if I buy something new I have to get rid of something old.
