INDIA: Get to know India By Taking the Train

India has one of the largest and busiest railway networks in the world, connecting cities, towns, and remote villages across the country.

Indian Railways carry over 8 billion passengers annually making it the backbone of India's transportation.

I have seen photos and videos of Indian trains packed to the brim with people overflowing out the windows and clinging to the roofs while the train is moving within feet of shacks which are people’s homes.

I was prepared for the worst.

We took the train in southern India from Kozhikode to Alleppey, a 6 hour train ride.

The wait at the station was pretty quiet.

Trains in India are not just a mode of transport but an experience in themselves. They include the luxurious Palace on Wheels, the scenic Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, the long-distance Rajdhani, the Shatabdi Express for speed and comfort and local trains in cities like Mumbai for daily commuters.

And then our train arrived.....

Passengers with the international cell phone obsession.

Food service.

I thought this sign for the washroom was interesting and was very relieved they were Western Style....

Our train experience reminded us of many European trains and train stations.

 Nothing to fear here.
