Kozhikode (Calicut) is a historic coastal city in Kerala, southern India,
It was where Vasco da Gama first landed in 1498, opening the sea route to India.
It was at one time the spice trade capital of India.Kozhikode is also renowned for its lush coconut groves and vast plantations.
They are fortunate that the climate supports year-round production.
Coconuts hold deep cultural and religious importance.
Coconuts are widely used in temple offerings, festivals, and traditional ceremonies.
Coconuts are a key ingredient in Kozhikode’s cuisine in different forms—grated, ground, or in the form of coconut milk and coconut oil.
Coconut oil is also widely used for skincare and even Ayurvedic treatments.
I hadn't realized all the byproducts of coconuts. Husks, fibres and shells, are repurposed into biodegradable and eco-friendly goods such as ropes, mats, bags and brushes.
We stopped at a coconut market to get a grasp of the magnitude of the industry. This trader had a hub of activity going on inside and outside his warehouse.
Sometimes it is easy to take for granted going to a grocery store to buy our food.
I can be guilty of forgetting all the hard work that labourers put into its production.
