LONDON: They Had no Choice

War is never glamorous.

Perhaps it serves a purpose for those that start them, but, for those that fight them, or get caught up in them, it is dangerous and deadly, amongst many other horrors.

This memorial in Hyde Park is dedicated to the brave animals that have been involved in warfare.

The monument was unveiled by Princess Margaret in Nov 2004, on the 90th anniversary of the start of WWI. It is inscribed with:

"This monument is dedicated to all the animals that served and died alongside British and allied forces in wars and campaigns throughout time."

"Many and various animals were employed to support British and Allied Forces in wars and campaigns over the centuries and as a result millions died · From the pigeon to the elephant they all played a vital role in every region of the world in the cause of human freedom · Their contribution must never be forgotten."

As the memorial says, sadly, "They had no choice".
