ITALY: The Cinque Terre

Literally translated Cinque Terre means "five lands".

There are five centuries-old hillside villages along a rugged coastline.

The villages are called Riomaggiore, Manarola, Corniglia, Vernazza and Monterosso.

You can get to the villages quickly by train from La Spezzia.

They also have hiking trails between the villages.

Or you can reach them by boat.

They were quaint quiet little fishing villages,

until Rick Steves, Lonely Planet and the likes "discovered them".

And the rest, as they say, is history.

We took the train to the farthest village north and worked our way south through each village.

Our cameras were very busy and its tough to pick the best photos.

Being on cliffs there was a lot of uphill and downhill walking.

I would think it would be great for getting strong legs and a teenage butt.

A couple of days later we opted for a boat ride along the coast to see them from a different perspective.

We had a beautiful sunny day and it was awesome for a sail along the coast.

It is so pretty and our cameras got a workout.

Ponte Verde is not one of the Cinque Terre Villages. It is a beautiful little village on the water south a bit and "off the beaten path".  (Maybe because Rick Steeves doesn't even mention it. Ssshhhhhh..... keep it quiet.)

Instead of staying in one of the little Cinque Terre villages we opted to stay in another small village further south and east called Fezzano.

We lived like "locals" and took the local bus to La Spezia and Ponte Verde. We even shopped liked locals and carried our groceries home on the bus.

Our last night in Fezzano Marie found us a great little degustation restaurant around the corner and we had a 13 course degustation tasting menu. As expected, fish was on the menu. The food was excellent.

Our Maitre'd also doubled as the musical talent along with his partner, the chef.

It was a great way to end our stay in the Cinque Terre area. We would all highly recommend staying in Fezzano and our great AirBnb on the harbour.

Without any hesitation: Five Thumbs Up!
