ITALY: Driving Through the Tuscan Countryside

Tuscany is a region in central Italy. Its capital, Florence, is home to some of the world’s most recognizable Renaissance art and architecture

It is also home to rolling hills, vineyards, wineries small towns and did I mention more wineries?

On our way heading out of Florence we stopped at the American cemetery

It honours the fallen American war heroes, 4,000 of them, mostly bombers, from WWII.

It is a beautiful, peaceful and well maintained cemetery.

We had a fun tour with an open top vehicle.

The countryside has rolling hills covered in vineyards.

When in Tuscany, a winery tour is a must. September is the start of harvest season so they were busy picking and mechanically crushing.

Some old vintage bottles. Our guide told us they don't dust them because they don't want to damage the labels in case they end of being valuable vintages. I'm not sure if that's their story and their sticking to it, or, they need a new cleaning crew.

Sampling the local produce is essential.

There are cute villages

And medieval towns.

Gorgeous views of the countryside.

Siena is a city which has 17 districts, called contrades. Each one has their own emblem and flag.

Their pride lies in their twice yearly horse races, through the city centre. The race is called the "Palio".

The neighborhoods/contrades compete for a coveted prize, which is the honour of flying their neighbourhood's flag.

Pisa is a well known city in Tuscany. And yes, the leaning tower of Pisa does lean. And no, none of us got in the lineup to climb it.
