VIETNAM: Life on the Mekong Delta

The Mekong River is one of the longest rivers in the world running through six different countries in Southeast Asia.

It originates at the Tibetan Plateau and flows nearly 3000 km in a south eastern direction.

The Mekong River unravels into nine rivers which creates the fertile Delta before it empties into the South China Sea.

The Mekong Delta is situated in Cambodia and southwestern Vietnam.

In Vietnam the Mekong delta is intensively developed for agriculture. The area is one of the most productive and intensively cultivated areas in Asia.

It is called “the ‘rice bowl of Vietnam.

The river starts in the Himalayas and passes through ChinaMyanmarThailand and Cambodia before reaching Vietnam, which partly explains why the waters are so murky.

The delta covers more than 15,000 square miles.

It's biologically diverse and home to unique ecosystems, with over 1,000 different animal species.

It's the agricultural heart of southern Vietnam and one of the most important fishing regions in all of Vietnam.

Some 20% (20 million) of the Vietnamese population lives in the Mekong Delta. Nearly 85% of the population are rural.

Life in the area revolves around water with floating markets selling a variety of fruits, flowers and livestock grown in the region.

The region produces considerable quantities of rice and fish products.

Boats are filled with fresh watermelons, tiny dugouts carry pigs, and barges overflow. These ladies were cutting fresh pineapple to enjoy on the spot.

Some people live on their boats.

There are industries located along the water.

And on land there are markets selling an abundance of goods.

And someone lucky will have these flowers delivered.

.Life on the delta changes every day.

Anything dangerous in the murky waters, probably water snakes?

Gordon, I don't know if there is anything dangerous in the water. They didn't say anything to us to watch out for or to keep our hands in the boat. But I can tell you, there is no way I'd be swimming in it!
