The Prokletije mountains are a range of mountains shared by Albania, Kosovo, and Montenegro.
It is characterized by its unique border-crossing where the mountains serve as the border between the three countries.
The mountains are also called The Accursed Mountains because they are so inhospitable.
This rugged and remote region is part of
the Albanian Alps.
Prokletije National Park in Montenegro is a stunning park that is home to scenic landscapes with towering peaks and deep gorges.
We stayed in Plav Lake, nestled at the foot of the
Prokletije mountain range.
Plav Lake, like most lakes in Montenegro, it is a glacial lake, formed as the last ice age ended, roughly 10,000 years ago.
It is surrounded by green rocky hills and a small town.
It is considered to be the centre of ecotourism in Montenegro.
We had hoped to get to enjoy hikes in Prokletije park, however, the weather was not cooperating.
After a heavy night of rain we decided we’d drive into the mountains and see if we could go hiking or at least a scenic walk.
The roads were a bit rough.
Little did we know how bad it would become.
We passed a herd of sheep and young shepherds that did not speak English, but, it was clear they were astounded to see a car on their goat paths. They must have thought we were nuts. We did not dispute and were in complete agreement of their assessment.
We hiked to The Eye (Oko Skakavice), a brilliant turquoise blue lake.
We continued hiking through the Ropojana valley
Just barely.

Hi Linda
That does look a scary drive and even though the car looks very nice, roadside assistance could also be a problem and the sheep herders could probably not help if you broke down.
You and John truly have adventurer spirits. The bus ride and border crossing you described in a previous post was very interesting, even if uncertain, and a testament to your risk tolerance. Now our travels are over, we will be more settled for a while, and I will be checking your blog more frequently.
You always look great and do incredibly well living out of one large suitcase and a carry-on, maybe John packs things for you too.
Take care you two.
Thanks Gordon. I didn't get any photos of the really scary parts of that mountain drive. The photos I did take were before it got frightening and when we felt safe enough to stop and get out of the car. It was awful! I was honestly afraid we would either demolish the car, roll off the edge, or slam into boulders and become paraplegics. NEVER EVER AGAIN!!!! I give John credit for getting the car through it, and me credit for keeping my mouth shut. (P.S. John might have a thing or two that he carries for me.)
and so he should, as you both look great. When we did Pikes Peak this summer, I have never heard so many choice words from Anne once we got above the tree line.
Anne.... using choice words.... hahahaha. I had all kinds of choice words going through my head, but I was too scared, and I knew John was scared, so I never said them. It was a challenge and I am very proud of myself.
