MEXICO: Dog Walking in San Miguel

Through the power of Facebook I found an animal shelter in San Miguel that needs volunteers to help with dog walking.

I figured as a destination for our morning walk we could walk to the shelter. Just to check it out.

The shelter was a 30 minute walk, downhill, from our Airbnb.

The long and the short of it, our last week in San Miguel we were walking shelter dogs every morning.

Those daily walks gave us so much pleasure and were "The Highlight of the Day".

The shelter is open for adoptions and has a full time veterinary clinic.

These former street urchins are now safe and cared for at the shelter.

The dogs have their routines and we became a part of their routine. We would walk them up the hill and then stop on the steps. We pretended the rest was for some conversations.

Secretly, we were more than overjoyed when they wanted to snuggle with us.

Well, maybe it wasn't quite so secret.

I am not sure who got the most out of our walks....

P.S. This guy was adopted on our last day.

He is now a dog with a home.

Wonderful photos! And what a lovely thing to do, Linda. But the sheer number of abandoned dogs is what is upsetting, and reminded me of the ugly side of St Croix, USVI, and many parts of the world. If only people realised cute little puppies grow up. And, if only people would neuter their animals.... oh, hell, I'm being a Grinch.... just, if only!

Apple, I agree. Neutering would make a huge difference to reducing the number of homeless animals. As you know, we fostered rescue dogs in Houston for about 10 years, and it always astounded me the never-ending abundance of stray dogs in the city. Mobile spay and neuter clinics are a great start to the problem and I am sure donations to them are always welcomed. Linda
