CANADA: Vineyards on Vancouver Island?

When we found out there are vineyards on Vancouver Island we figured we needed to do some research.

Purely for educational purposes. Obviously.

Turns out that vineyards on Vancouver Island have been producing wine since the 1970’s.

There are now over 30 wineries, most of them small, family-run estates.

The majority of the vineyards are located in the Cowichan Valley, just over an hour north of Victoria.

The terroir of the land creates the growing conditions for the grapes.

The Vancouver Island Ranges on the western side of the island shape the wine region’s microclimate.

The mountains shelter the vineyards from heavy Pacific rainfall on the western side, creating a drier, sunnier corridor along the island’s eastern side.

This natural rain shadow allows grapes to ripen more consistently, but they still benefit from the cool nights that enhance acidity.

The soils, often a mix of glacial deposits, clay, and sand, provide good drainage.

The nearby Pacific Ocean moderates temperatures, preventing extremes of heat or frost, while cool breezes help grapes ripen slowly.

The mild climate and ocean breezes create the right climate for certain grape varieties, specifically, pinot gris, ortega, and pinot Noir.

These grapes are ideal for crisp white wines and light red wines. Specifically, Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris, Ortega and sparkling wines.

It is nice to to get together with friends for a social life.

Especially with vineyards close by to go wine tasting, for educational purposes, of course.

And with a handsome designated driver.

Always drink responsibly.
