CROATIA: Istria Peninsula

The Istria Peninsula is triangular shaped on the NW coast of Croatia.

On the north it is bordered with Slovenia, and on the south and west it is bordered by the Adriatic Sea.

It is the largest peninsula in the Adriatic Sea.

From an Italian perspective it is considered the Tuscany of Croatia.

Or, if you look at it from a French perspective, it is considered the Provence of Croatia.

There is a mix of architecture, ranging from Roman, to mediaeval to Venetian.

CROATIA: Wine Tasting

Who knew Croatia produces great wine and competes with the best in the world wine market?

I certainly didn't.

The lack of common recognition is because the producers are small and locals consume a large portion of it, which leaves little for export.

There are 3 main wine regions and more than 300 geographically defined wine districts. They produce mostly white wine in the north with red and white wine in the south.

CROATIA: Zagreb

Croatia has a population of about 4 million people (2022). Zagreb is the capital with a population of about 680K (2022).

The city of Zagreb is divided into 2 sections - Upper Town and Lower Town.

Connecting the two towns is the world's shortest funicular, at 66 metres.

It was constructed in 1888 and is the town's first public transit. It takes 60 seconds to get from the top to the bottom.

Or vice versa.

Meeting up in the Frankfurt Airport

John spent the month of September hiking the Camino del Norte from Santander, Spain to Santiago de Compostela, Spain with "The Boys". Over the 5 weeks they walked 600km.

(I wasn't invited, because I am "A Girl".)

I entertained myself in Italy.

After 5 weeks, each on our own adventure, we met up in the airport in Frankfurt, with John flying in from Madrid Spain, and me flying in from Catania, Italy.

And so we start another leg of the nomadic journey.

ITALY: Pompeii, Herculaneum, Mt Vesuvius

Pompeii was founded by Greek colonists, probably around the 9-8th century BC. After many centuries and battles it became a Roman city.

Nearby, Herculaneum was a wealthy seaside escape for prosperous Roman citizens.

The two cities are about 11 miles apart.

They both were destroyed on August 24th AD 79 when Mount Vesuvius erupted. The devastation of the eruption was unprecedented.

Around 2,000 people died in Pompeii and 300 are known to have died in Herculaneum, however, the entire death toll in the area could have been around 16,000.

Both cities are currently UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

ITALY: The Cinque Terre

Literally translated Cinque Terre means "five lands".

There are five centuries-old hillside villages along a rugged coastline.

The villages are called Riomaggiore, Manarola, Corniglia, Vernazza and Monterosso.

ITALY: Florence by Night

Sometimes some of the best scenes are by night when the city is lit up to impress.

Florence is one of those cities.

ITALY: Driving Through the Tuscan Countryside

Tuscany is a region in central Italy. Its capital, Florence, is home to some of the world’s most recognizable Renaissance art and architecture

It is also home to rolling hills, vineyards, wineries small towns and did I mention more wineries?

ITALY: Florence and Michelangelo's the David

Florence is all about arts and culture.

A definite highlight and must-see is visiting Michelangelo's the David.

Walking into the room the statue is imposing at 14 feet.

ITALY: The Islands of Murano and Burano

Murano and Burano are two islands that are a quick ferry ride from Venice. They are actually considered a part of Venice.

The closest one is Murano with a 15 minute ferry ride.

ITALY: Venice, Canals, Gondolas and Gondoliers

When I think of Venice, the first thing I think of are canals and gondolas.

Venice is made of 117 islands, 150 canals, 4 main bridges and 391 walkways.

The canals are very pretty, iconic and romantic.

The city is a UNESCO site.
