In Victoria, on Vancouver Island, the tradition is to take a plunge on New Year's Day in one of the many beaches in Victoria.
Some people consider it an invigorating start to the new year.
New Year's Day, by chance, we happened upon some Polar Bear swimmers when we went for a walk along the coast.
Some people opt for a quick run in, dunk, and quick run out.
Some stay and chat.
Not only is the water cold, coming out provides little relief as the air is still cold.
I will confess, neither John nor I had any intentions of joining the crazy people.
This is one Canadian Rite of Passage that we do not need to partake in.
