AUSTRIA: Mountain Villages reminiscent of The Sound of Music

Austria has super cute towns and villages nestled in the mountains and foothills.

This brings to mind the iconic movie "The Sound of Music" that takes place in Austria.

As an aside, much to John's horror, my sister Marie and I love to belt out Sound of Music songs while we watch the movie.

It really is probably not a pretty sight, nor sound, because not only am I parking challenged, I am also musically challenged!

Having tin ears, I can't hear where Marie's singing talents lie.

What I learned when we were in Austria, is that not everyone in Austria, let alone the world, knows about the beloved movie and not everyone in the world can sing along to the music. (Much to John's relief.)

I know that's a bit shocking to fathom, but, it emphasizes the reality that we are so North American-centric that we forget that not everyone grew up with the same reference points as we did.

Having said that, businesses love to find an opportunity to make money and offer tours (for North Americans) around the Sound of Music movie. In reality though, very little of the movie was actually filmed in Austria.

The villages are so cute with quaint houses and shops.

Yes, villages really do look like this!

The country churches are clearly recognizable with their distinct steeples.

This was the view from our AirBnb's balcony in Thaur, overlooking the small town and then a vista across the valley and into the mountains.

With an abundance of trees around it would appear that wood is the fuel of choice for heat.

On a rainy day walk around the village of Udern, we walked past a house with chickens in their yard.

They obviously are thrifty and have a business mind.

 And a sense of humour.

As long as the village has a coffee shop John is always happy.
